5 Tips for Studying the Bible as a Beginner

The Bible is a great resource for moms, whether you’re looking for guidance, encouragement, or something else entirely. God has the ultimate knowledge and wisdom on how to parent. However, if you’re new to Bible study, it can be a bit daunting to try to figure out where to start. Here are 5 tips to help you get the most out of your Bible study as a beginner.

1. Don’t feel like you have to read the entire Bible from front to back as a beginner.

The Bible is a big book, and it can be intimidating to try to read it all at once. It’s okay to start small and gradually work your way through it. There are plenty of great Bible studies out there that can help you focus on specific parts of the Bible. You can start with specific books or topics that interest you. I always recommend starting in the Gospels. They are a great introduction to who Jesus is and what He did for us.

2. Find a good study Bible that has notes and commentary from biblical scholars.

This will help you better understand what you’re reading. A study Bible can also provide historical context for the stories and events you’re reading about. For instance, my husband loves archaeology and so an archaeological bible is perfect for him. Find what resonates with you and dive in.

3. Join a Bible study group or class at your church.

This is a great way to meet other moms who are also studying the Bible and learn from each other. If you don’t have time to commit to a regular weekly meeting, look for online Bible study groups you can join.

4. Use online resources like study guides and podcasts to supplement your personal study time.

If you’re looking for a more in-depth study of the Bible, there are plenty of great resources online. One of my favorite ways to study the Bible is through Bible study guides. They usually include commentary from biblical scholars, discussion questions, and activities to help you apply what you’re learning.

Another great way to learn more about the Bible is through podcasts. There are a lot of great podcasts out there that will help you dive deeper into specific topics or books of the Bible.

Whatever method you choose, make sure you are asking God to open your heart and mind as you study. He wants to speak to you and guide you through His Word.

5. Pray before you begin reading and ask God to reveal truth to you through His Word.

When studying the Bible, it is important to pray and ask God to open your heart and mind to His truth. Ask for the revelation. Ask God to speak to you. And then be open to what He has to say. Sometimes, we can get wrapped up in trying to understand everything with our minds, but the Bible is ultimately a spiritual book. So ask God to reveal Himself to you as you study His Word.

The Bible is an incredible resource for us as mamas, but it can be intimidating if you’re new to studying it. By starting with specific books or topics, finding a good study Bible, joining a study group, and using online resources, you can make the most out of your Bible study time as a beginner. Most importantly, don’t forget to pray! Ask God to reveal Himself to you through His Word and He will surely do so.
