Lessons for Mothers from the Bible
I honestly never thought I’d be able to write a post about being a mother. I never thought motherhood was in the cards for me due to some fertility struggles throughout my 20s. Mother’s Day was definitely not on the radar. But then I met my husband and he gave me the greatest gift of all time. Truth be told, motherhood looks so much different when we do it biblically than what the world has to say about it all.
Motherhood is so exhausting and daunting when the world says we must cook organic, gluten-free meals every single day from scratch, be Insta-perfect every single moment, and use every Pinterest trend out there. If we don’t meet those standards, the world makes us feel bad about ourselves, like we aren’t doing enough. But that’s not the truth. The world’s version of motherhood is a total farce.
I’ve heard things like:
- You need to be a Pinterest-perfect mom
- Motherhood holds women back
- Moms can do it all and be superwomen
- If you stay home, it’s a bad choice. If you go to work, it’s a bad choice.
- You will screw your kids up no matter what you do
- You have to give up everything about yourself to be a good mom
- Motherhood is our highest calling
The list could go on forever because the world we live in is broken and so therefore it makes sense the view of motherhood is broken.
So what does the Bible have to say about being a Mother? Here are bible lesson on mothers.
First, children are a gift from God
Lo, children are a heritage of the Lord:
Psalm 127:3
And the fruit of the womb is his reward.
I personally know this more than anyone. Listen, friend, I know it’s hard. Being a mother 24/7 is exhausting and never-ending work. We have strong-willed children. Sometimes they don’t listen. It can be hard and feel thankless at times. But that doesn’t mean the work isn’t valuable. Sin makes things in this world hard but we have to remember that children are from God.
Mothers need to have faith
But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren?
Matthew 12:48-50
And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!
For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.
Before we worry about the immaculate home and the Insta-worthy photos, we need to be women of faith. Mothers are charged with raising children and training them in all things and that includes faith. I personally think it’s the biggest calling for mothers. It’s not about the perfect birthday party but about giving your children a model of faith in Christ and helping them cultivate their own faith. We are to nurture and love our children so they may see God through us and develop their own relationship with God.
Honestly, take a deep breath because what God says and what the world says are vastly different. The most important thing we can do for our children is to love God wholeheartedly and teach our children to do the same.
Mothers need to support and mentor one another
That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
Titus 2: 4-5
To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.
This one is so important. The world is great at creating competition between women. Instagram and Pinterest are the perfect places to see this in action. God didn’t create us so we can compete against each other. He calls us instead to pour into one another and support each other. It truly does take a village to raise children and we can’t do that if we’re competing against each other constantly.
Living in a state with no family around, I quickly realized how vital it is to have a solid group of friends that are like family. We need women we can rely on that share our values to help us serve God and serve our families. Surrounding myself with other Christian women has helped me become a better wife and mother. God bless the woman in my circle.
We can also learn about ourselves as mothers because God allowed us to share His characteristics.
Comforter
As a mother comforts her child,
so will I comfort you;
and you will be comforted over Jerusalem.
Isaiah 66:13
Protector
I will meet them as a bear that is bereaved of her whelps, and will rend the caul of their heart, and there will I devour them like a lion: the wild beast shall tear them.
Hosea 13:8
Provider
Shall I bring to the birth, and not cause to bring forth? saith the Lord: shall I cause to bring forth, and shut the womb? saith thy God.
Rejoice ye with Jerusalem, and be glad with her, all ye that love her: rejoice for joy with her, all ye that mourn for her:
That ye may suck, and be satisfied with the breasts of her consolations; that ye may milk out, and be delighted with the abundance of her glory.
Isaiah 66:9-11
God has given us so much as women and our motherhood is directly tied to our womanhood. Eve was the mother. of all things (Genesis 3:20) before she had Cain and Abel. Even after the fall, our womanhood is tied to motherhood. Adam could have given her a name that meant death, sin, anything doom and gloom but instead, he saw her potential for all of humanity.
I could write an entire book on what the Bible says about motherhood and how we can see God through it. I encourage you to study motherhood and womanhood. See how God is ever-present in motherhood.
In the mundane, it’s easy to forget how God sees us and what His intentionality was behind our motherhood. I pray today you begin to see your gift the way God does.
