Gospel-Focused Motherhood: What We Can Learn from Jesus as a Perfect Example
As mothers, we are called to raise our children with the gospel at the center. It’s not always easy, but we can take comfort and find strength in knowing that Jesus is the perfect example of how to live out our faith. Here are three ways we can learn from Jesus and apply his teachings to our lives as mothers.
1. Jesus was selfless.
One of the most important things we can do as mothers is to put our children first. This doesn’t mean that we should neglect our own needs, but rather that we should be willing to sacrifice our time, energy, and resources for the sake of our children. Jesus did this in a perfect way. He embraced His human nature while on Earth so that He could suffer and die for our sins. In motherhood, there will be times when we are called to make sacrifices for our children. Whether it’s giving up sleep to comfort them when they’re sick or putting their needs ahead of our own, selflessness is an important quality for moms to have. The Atonement is the perfect example of the selflessness of Christ and something we can try to model for our children.
2. Jesus was patient.
Patience is another virtue that is essential for mothers. Just think about all of the times you’ve had to bite your tongue when your child is acting out or testing your limits! Jesus was patient with us, even though we constantly sin against Him. He never gave up on us, and He patiently waited for us to repent and turn back to Him. As mothers, we need to have that same patience with our children. They will make mistakes, but it’s important that we never give up on them. With patience and love, they will eventually learn from their mistakes and grow into responsible adults.
3. Jesus was obedient.
Obedience is another key lesson we can learn from Jesus. He was obedient to His heavenly Father’s plan, even though it led Him to a painful death on the cross. Because He was obedient, He was able to save us from our sins and offer us eternal life in heaven. As mothers, obedience is also important – especially when it comes to obeying God’s commands about parenting. When we obey God’s Word, we are able to raise our children in the best way possible and teach them about his love for us.
4. Mundane Moments with a Heavenly Perspective
In motherhood, there will be many mundane moments. Dishes need to be washed, laundry needs to be done, and meals need to be cooked. It’s easy to get bogged down in the day-to-day tasks of running a household. But as Christians, we can have a different perspective on these mundane moments. Instead of seeing them as a chore, we can see them as an opportunity to serve God and our families. Every time we do a load of laundry, we can thank God for the blessing of clean clothes. Every time we cook a meal, we can thank God for the food we have to eat. And every time we wash dishes, we can thank God for the blessing of running water. When we have a heavenly perspective on the mundane moments of motherhood, they become opportunities to serve God and grow in our faith. Show your children the blessing of the mundane.
