Why do we still teach the Ten Commandments?
Even though the Ten Commandments may seem outdated to some, they are actually still very much relevant. The commandments teach us to respect others, be truthful, and not covet what others have. In a world where so much seems to be focused on greed and self-promotion, it’s important to remember the simple lessons that the Ten Commandments teach us.
The Ten Commandments are actually affirmed by Jesus Himself. Matthew 5:19 (NIV) says, “Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.”
In other words, Jesus is saying that those who teach others to obey the commandments will be considered great in God’s kingdom. So not only are the Ten Commandments still relevant but they are also affirmed by Jesus Christ Himself.
